The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and Gov. Deval Patrick are close to striking a deal on what the state would be paid in gambling revenues from a Taunton casino.

Speaking with reporters Tuesday, Patrick confirmed what the Times had reported earlier in the day, that the two sides are close to finalizing the agreement, according to a transcript provided by the administration’s press office.

Tribe and state leaders have been renegotiating a pact since October, when the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs rejected the first agreement. The BIA found the initial compact, which called for paying the state 21.5 percent of gross gambling revenues, too lucrative for the state without enough concessions for the tribe.
